Description
Plaka Beach lies on the west coast of Andros, near the village of Zaganiari in the Korthi district. It is a small, beautiful stretch of sand with fine pebbles and shady trees — the third beach after Chalkolimionas and Apothikes, in an area of strong archaeological interest.
Its appeal is the mix of greenery for shade, deep-blue waters and sand with fine pebble, while the rocks in its corners are great for sunbathing and fishing. Thanks to the orientation of its little bay, Plaka is sheltered from the summer meltemi more than other beaches nearby — which is why it has long been a favourite of local fishermen.
The spot is steeped in history: once a gathering place for fishermen, its old stone konakia huts still stand near the sand, and traces of a prehistoric settlement have been found here, close to the famous Strofilas and neighbouring Zagora. It is about 30 km from Gavrio and 20 from Chora — from Stavropeda toward Korthi, turn right at Zaganiari, below the chapel of Agios Georgios Faralis.
