Andros Museum of Contemporary Art Verified listing

The Andros Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated on July 28, 1979 by the Vassilis and Elizas Goulandris Foundation. It is located in Chora of Andros, birthplace of Vassilis P. Goulandris. The reason for the initiative to build the building was the need to house and present remarkable sculptures. Sculptures that the Andrian sculptor Michalis Tombros left in his hometown. This original core was then enriched with works that came from the personal collection of the couple Vassilis and Eliza Goulandris. The Museum of Contemporary Art of Andros was designed by the architect Stamos Papadakis. The engineer Paris Frangoulis and the supervision was done by Pantelis Karadontis.

The positive response of this effort, the growing attendance and interest pushed towards the expansion of the Museum. On July 20, 1986, the New Wing of the Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated, opposite the Old. The desire of the founders was to create a small Museum of Contemporary Art. Equipped with the most modern museum standards, in order to meet the conditions for organizing international exhibitions.

The design of the exteriors was carried out by the exterior architect Miranda Spiliopoulou-Vazaka. It was based on respect for the natural and architectural landscape and its emergence as a work of art. Building materials (marble and stone) in harmonious colors with the rest of the island were preferred. He received a distinction for the inclusion of the building in the surrounding area in the international competition “The International Garden and Greenery Exposition”, Osaka, Japan, 1990, with a publication in Contemporary Landscapes in the World.

The main goal for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Andros is to continue to offer its own creative proposal in contemporary visual reflections. Included in the trajectory of international events in the field of visual arts and aesthetic education to contribute to the promotion of modern and contemporary art, Greek and international to the general public.
