Kairios Library Verified listing

The Kairios Library is a non-profit organization that preserves and promotes the history of Andros and the spiritual and cultural life of the island. It achieves this through the collection of manuscripts, prints, books, and images but also works of art and crafts. All its collections are available by appointment to scholars. Almost 3,000 volumes from the private collection of Theofilos Kairis and 85,000 in total are here. It also has many rare editions and manuscripts, historical archives as well as a small archaeological collection of pottery and statuettes.

The Kairios Library has a long tradition of publishing scientific works mainly on history, philosophy, local architecture, and nature. It has also set up a modern bookbinding and maintenance workshop. The library rooms are from another era. Those who love books will be amazed.

International conferences, exhibitions, as well as literary and musical events are organized during the summer.

Theophilos Kairis

The Kairios Library is named after one of the most important intellectuals of the revolution of 1821. Theophilos Kairis, a great teacher of the Nation who proclaimed the revolution in Andros in 1821 as a member of the Friendly Society. A close friend of Adamantios Korais founded a high school on the island where he also taught philosophy, philology, mathematics, and astronomy. Unfortunately, he was imprisoned as a heretic in 1852 in the prisons of Syros. The Andriot thinker and fighter with great intellectual work passed away the following year.
