Platanos sits on Kairi Square in the centre of Andros Town, under the old plane tree that gave the place its name. It opens in the morning as a cafe and turns into a meze restaurant by midday, with tables in the shade of the tree and the sea visible on both sides of the square. The look is that of an old village kafeneio, with wooden chairs and lights strung through the branches after dark.

The kitchen works around traditional meze and sharing platters. Froutalia, the Andros omelette made with local sausage and potatoes, is cooked here every day. Alongside it come handmade meatballs, cheese rolls, grilled octopus, prawns in ouzo and fresh chips. The meat and seafood platters arrive in large portions, made for a table of friends, and one platter often feeds two people.

The drinks list covers ouzo, tsipouro, beer and wine, and coffee is served from opening. The kitchen also makes spoon sweets and tray sweets, a Greek tradition that is getting harder to find. Seating is entirely outdoors, dogs are welcome, and there are vegetarian options on the menu. In high summer there can be a short wait for a table at peak hours.

Kairi Square is where Andros Town gathers, next to the Archaeological Museum and a short walk from the Museum of Contemporary Art. Platanos is open every day from 10 in the morning until late, for coffee early or ouzo after dark. Takeaway and delivery are available.
