Small-batch winery in Chones, above Ormos Korthiou

Description

Mastori Wines is a small family winery in Chones, a hill village above Ormos Korthiou in the south of Andros. Dimitris Mastoris bottled his first wine in 2017 and has kept the operation deliberately small since then, working in tiny batches with minimal intervention. Some of the vines on the property are over thirty years old.

Fermentation runs on native wild yeasts and the wines go into the bottle unfiltered, which keeps the texture and the aromatics of each parcel. There are three labels, all carrying Protected Geographical Indication status. Koumari is a dry red from the local grape of the same name, Apanemo a dry rosé from the same variety, and Pheroe a dry white blended from Assyrtiko and Potamisi.

Beyond wine the estate distils tsipouro, both young and aged, along with ouzo, mastic liqueur, lemon liqueur and lemonade. Everything is sold at the production site itself, and the bottles also turn up in supermarkets in Korthi, Chora, Batsi and Gavrio.

Chones is a short drive up from Ormos Korthiou, turning off the coast road into the hills. Production is limited and vintages sell out, so it is worth calling the winery before you visit or place an order.
