Description
Lygizos Pastry Shop stands on the main pedestrian street of Chora, the capital of Andros, right in the heart of the market. A historic shop, it is easy to spot thanks to the marble mosaic reading Athinaikon set into its facade, a reminder of an era when the place looked as modern and cosmopolitan as the grand patisseries of Athens, and it is still carefully preserved today.
Open since 1986, Lygizos keeps the island's authentic recipes alive, always built around the almond that defines Andriot sweets. His cakes are known for their finesse and lightness. The display counter is famous for the Nougatina, a feather-light cake of almond meringue layered with creme patissiere and finished with chantilly, next to the airy Amygdalou, a pyramid full of flavour, and the Glaso, the traditional Andriot wedding cake finished in white glaze.
Beyond the cakes you will find classic amygdalota scented with orange-blossom water and dusted with icing sugar, pastitsia, and kaltsounia rich with local walnut and honey, as well as millefeuille and chocolate gateau. In the summer months the shop also makes a refreshing almond ice cream from fresh milk, a taste that brings back island summers for locals and visitors alike.
In the heart of Chora's pedestrian street, among locals and travellers, Lygizos is the place to taste on the spot or to carry home, beautifully wrapped, a piece of the sweet tradition of Andros in the Cyclades.
